When did you join the RBH team:
About 20 years ago when I started fixing bikes on the streets of Harrisburg in the late 90’s

Current bicycle you are riding:
REI Big Buzz single speed – that still looks like a hipster single speed but has new wheels with big hubs – the front is a generator and hence I have daytime running lights – the rear is an internal 8 speed

All-time favorite bicycle:
I love ‘em all – but first modern bicycle was a Nishiki MTB that was too small – but I rode it every where – on road tours, bicyclist would ask me where was my road bike – I would explain that this was my road bike, and my mountain bike, and my camping bike, and my night time lights blazing bike, etc.

What you enjoy most about Recycle Bicycle:
Watching kids ride their bikes after we fix them.

Current bicycle you are riding:

All-time favorite bicycle:
Whatever one I am riding.  Actually I have two bikes in mind. The first was a single speed banana seat bike from the ‘80s that got me around our neighborhood. It was important for both street and dirt tracks as well as homemade ramps. The second was in the late ‘80s when our uncle got us 10 speed mountain bikes for Christmas. It was a huge surprise and helped increase the local distance to Carlisle and Mechanicsburg.

What you enjoy most about Recycle Bicycle:
The level of commitment to get bikes to anyone. It is amazing to watch this organization grow over the years in a bike network. Recycle Bicycle is a jewel in Central PA that provides alternative transportation, shifting the default mindset of car driven culture. This should be impacting our physical environment and relationship to other humans in the daily – live, work and play activities.

Current job/position, community involvement & other pertinent adventures:
National Director, Palliative and Hospice Care, Department of Veterans Affairs
Medical Director, Hospice Unit, Lebanon VA Medical Center
Clinical Associate Professor, College of Medicine, Penn State

Volunteer and facilitator of the Earn A Bike program for the Lebanon Valley Bicycle Coalition

When did you join the RBH team:
It’s been over a decade since I started intermittently volunteering with RBH. This volunteering led me to work with Ross Willard who helped establish the Earn A Bike program for Lebanon county that works closely with the Rescue Mission, Jubilee post-prison program, Lebanon VA Medical Center’s transition program and more recently, we’ve reached out to the Lebanon branch of the Harrisburg Area Community College.

Current bicycle you are riding:
I’d have to say there are 3 bicycles I’m currently riding. Most commonly, I ride a foldable bike to and from work, which is about a 3-mile commute one-way. Most every weekend I ride a tandem with my wife on various rail trails. And when doing a longer solo or group trip, I did some bike camping on the C&O Canal trail in Maryland, I was riding an older Schwinn that I paid $10 for at a garage sale that I’ve set up for touring and light trails.

All-time favorite bicycle:
My wife and I have a hybrid Raleigh tandem that is SO comfortable (steel frame, geometry that works for us) and is fun to ride as we explore new rail-trails and seek out new places for brunch or lunch. This is “hands down” my favorite bicycle.

What you enjoy most about Recycle Bicycle:
The rewards from Recycle bicycle are multiple. Putting used bikes to good use keeps these bikes out of the landfill, giving people a “hand up” as they often need transportation to/from work, providing an opportunity to show caring to the community and bringing together a wonderful group of volunteers who are committed to serving others. When you see a person ride away from RBH on a bicycle that they helped to build with a big smile on their face, it doesn’t get any better.
